AN ELABORATE MEIJI PERIOD JAPANESE SHODHANA CABINET

The classic multi-tiered example is topped by a carved openwork phoenix bird crest above shelves and galleries for displaying family heirlooms, prized possessions and objects of art. The shelves, framed in scroll-cut hardwood fretwork, are asymmetrically arranged with compartments fronted by shibayama technique panels. The whole is raised on an elaborate base of openwork hardwood carving bolstered by heavy cabriole legs ending in a scrolling toe. Circa 1890.
