AN ILLUMINATED QUR’AN, PERSIA, QAJAR, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY

Arabic manuscript on paper, 198 leaves, 19 lines to the page, written in naskh in black ink, ruled in black and gold, verses separated by gold and polychrome rosettes, surah headings written in red thuluth against a gold ground within a cartouche decorated with polychrome scrolls on a blue ground, gold and polychrome verse markers in the margins, commentaries in black nasta’liq in the margins within clouds on a gold ground within cartouches, f.1b and 2a with an illuminated frontispiece composed of a thick border of interlacing flowers and split-palmettes, f.1a and 197b with a central gold medallion with red thuluth on an interlacing ground of leaves and flowers, in a floral lacquer binding

20.2 by 13.1cm.

Condition Report:
In good condition, the margins overall clean, minor rubbing and stains, the opening bifolium nearly detached, the last leaf loose, lacking two pages (likely the first and last page which would have had a mirrowing medallion), the binding with minor damages and restorations, as viewed.
