AN ILLUSTRATED FOLIO FROM JAMI'S HAFT AWRANG, YUSUF AND ZULAYKHA
Kashmir, Northern Indian subcontinent, 18th century
Gouache and gold on paper, inner margins ruled with black and gilt fillets, two lines of Persian text written in black nastaʿliq script, illustrated with a passage from section 39 of the well-known love story of Yusuf and Zulaykha; the inscription reads: 'Vali chon gowhar-e asrar sefti, Neshan z-an manba'-e anvar gofti - But since you have strung the pearl of secrets, you have spoken of the sign of that source of light'.
