AN IMPORTANT BLUE AND WHITE BARBED 'AUSPICIOUS FLOWER' DISH WITH THE MARK OF SHAH JAHAN
YONGLE PERIOD (1403-1425)
The central medallion is finely painted with floral scroll including rose, hibiscus, pomegranate, lotus, peony, chrysanthemum, and camellia blossoms, all borne on scrolling interlocking stems. The fluted cavetto is decorated with twelve floral sprays, and the flattened, barbed rim is decorated with lingzhi scroll. One side of the exterior near the foot is inscribed with the collector's mark of the fifth Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658), incorporating the title Sahib Qiran thani (The Second Lord of the [Celestial] Conjunction), and the date AH 1046, corresponding to 1637-38.
