AN INTERESTING MT. ATHOS RELIC ICON CIRCA 1900. Comprising an icon of Saint Panteleimon most certainly painted at the Russian monastery dedicated to him and located on Mount Athos. Here the great physician saint is traditionally depicted waist up holding a medicine box rendered on a gilt ground with gilt highlights so typical of Athos icons and the shoulder height inscription identifies him as The Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon. The verso with interesting period inscription, "This piece of olive wood was cut from a tree in the city of Nicomedia under which the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon was cut down. From the miserable sinner Yefim to the pilgrim Leon." 4 inches x 3.25 inches (10 x 8.5 cm).
