AN IRON-RED AND GILT-DECORATED TRIPOD CENSER, DAOGUANG MARK AND PROBABLY OF THE PERIOD
China, 1821-1850 or slightly later. Heavily potted, the globular body with upright curling handles standing on three bulbous short legs, decorated in shades of iron-red enamel with leafy lotus and ribbon-tied Eight Buddhist Emblems in a continuous meander, between borders of linked ruyi-heads and key-fret scrolls. The underside with an unglazed ring encircling ruyi-heads centered by a blossom. The rim decorated with a band of bats in flight amid scrolling clouds below a band of key-fret and the horizontal iron-red six-character mark da Qing Daoguang nianzhi. Note the finely gilt lines and details.
Provenance: Rieunier & Associés, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, France, 19 July 2005. A private collection in France, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Rieunier & Associés, dated 19 July 2005, accompanies this lot.
Condition: Good condition with minor old wear and firing irregularities including dark spots and pitting. Some touch-ups to the handles.
Weight: 4.2 kg (excl. stand), 5.1 kg (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 29.6 cm (excl. stand), 36 cm (incl. stand)
With a fitted hardwood stand, dating from the Qing dynasty or Republican period. (2)
This impressive iron-red enameled incense burner would have been the central part of a five-piece altar garniture, flanked by two candlesticks and two vases. It was most likely produced for a smaller temple or private altar. Compare a closely related example forming part of such an altar garniture in the collection of the Ethnographical Museum, Leiden, published in Anthony van Oort, Chinese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries, Lochem, 1977, pl. 1.
