AN OCTAGONAL CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER, QING DYNASTY
China, Qing dynasty (1644-1912). Of octagonal form, the central roundel carved in relief with a horse carrying a bundle of books above crashing waves and below scrolling clouds and a yin yang symbol, surrounded by raised trigrams (bagua), the sides with the Eight Buddhist and Eight Daoist Emblems, all against diapered grounds, the interior lacquered black.
Condition: Cracks, some minor losses, small touchups, the box and cover slightly warped.
