AN ORMOLU MOUNTED LAPIS LAZULI CORINTHIAN COLUMN, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

AN ORMOLU MOUNTED LAPIS LAZULI CORINTHIAN COLUMNPROBABLY RUSSIAN, EARLY 19TH CENTURY43cm high, base 12cm wideProvenance:Jean-Claude Ciancimino (1931-2014) and by descent.Exhibited:Oliver Hoare, Every Object Tells a Story, London 2017, cat. 313.Whilst it would be easy to assume this column to be Italian or French, it is more likely to be Russian; see Les Stroganoff, Une Dynastie de Mécènes, Musée Carnavalet, Paris, 2002, ex. Cat. P. 117, for a pair of ormolu mounted quartz and red marble columns, designed by the artist and architect Andreï Voronikhin (1759-1814) for Peterhof between 1800-06 and made by the Imperial Kolyvan Lapidary Workshop. Indeed, the choice of lapis lazuli is particularly Russian as this semi-precious hardstone was mined in Siberia.
