AN OTTOMAN CALLIGRAPHIC PANEL WITH METAL-THREAD EMBROIDERY
Ottoman Turkey, early 20th century
A tall silk embroidered panel with dense bands of small-scale Arabic calligraphy and geometric and floral motifs, with a central roundel reading Allah Muhammad surrounded by four smaller roundels with calligraphic inscriptions, probably the names of the four Caliphs, the bottom roundel reads Ya Ali, also surrounded by four smaller roundels; much of the text is illegible, making a definitive identification difficult. Nevertheless, the composition closely resembles the typical Ottoman hilye, a traditional genre of Islamic calligraphy and literature describing the physical appearance and noble character of the Prophet Muhammad.
108cm x 46cm, total including frame 124cm x 61.2cm
