AN UNUSUAL DOUBLE-SIDED RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON, 19TH CENTURY

Tempera and gilding on wood. One side depicts the Mandylion, or "The Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands, " supported by two angels above stylized clouds. The reverse represents the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan, with Saint John the Baptist, attendant angels and God the Father appearing above. Inscribed in Church Slavonic. The unusually thick panel is fitted with cords and metal attachments, suggesting use as a processional icon. Russia, probably an Old Believer workshop of the Vladimir region, possibly Mstera, second half of the 19th century.

Conditions: Very good overall with age-related craquelure and light surface scratches.
