ANCIENT CHINESE ZHOU DYNASTY POTTERY JAR W DESIGNS
An unevenly potted jar from the Zhou Dynasty(1045 B.C. - 771 B.C.) in China. Handcrafted from coils of clay, the flat base is slightly inverted and the neck is flared. The sides are impressed in irregular patches with 5 bands of herringbone. The hard grey pottery has been fired to a purplish-brown color. A similar but larger jar of the Western Zhou period, from a group of tombs at Qingpu, Shanghai, and now in the Shanghai Museum, is published in Peng Qingyun 1993 p. 62 no. 225. It measures 6 1/2 inches tall with a 25 inch circumference. Good condition. This lot has a reserve.
