Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This painting is in sound condition overall. The upper portion depicting saints surrounding the seated Madonna and child is in very good condition, with only minor amount of retouching. Much the retouching in the upper scene has darkened over time, including a narrow strip through the upper left saint's beard and hand, and the contour of the back of his head; a portion of the check of the kneeling saint, left; the left shoulder of the standing saint, right; and an area near the feet of the kneeling saint, right. The punchwork and the intricate and varied sgrafitto techniques are in an excellent state of preservation. Regilding seems to be limited to the frame and the gold borders surrounding the three saints in the bottom register. Due to this regilding, restoration has been applied to solidify the painted edges of all three roundels. Further touches of restoration appear to exist in the bottom figures, although the fluorescence of the varnish somewhat hampers clear identification of retouching. The painted decorations in the left- and right-most spandrels are reconstructed. Flaking has developed in the gilded borders above the roundels, and a single area of flaking is located in the center of the top frame member. The wood panel support is composed of a vertically-grained board upon which the main scene is painted, four pieces of attached molding, and a horizontally-grained piece of wood attached to the face of the board upon which the three roundels are painted. The entire structure displays a moderate lateral convex warp. The reverse of the panel is coated with a thin layer of gesso and dark paint. Lifting in the gilding should be consolidated to prevent losses from developing, and cleaning to remove surface dirt may brighten the picture a bit. Although a full cleaning could be considered, a more measured approach to correct off-color restorations may be sufficient.
