James Creney of the 95th NY Vols, raised in rank to Breveted Colonel, effective March 13th, 1865, for "Gallant and meritorious services in front of Petersburg, Virginia". Signed by Andrew Johnson as President and Edwin M Stanton as Secretary of War on April 5th, 1866. On parchment, with paper seal, docketed. In modern frame, matted and glazed. OS: 22" x 18", SS: 18" x 14". Good condition, folded, as issued. Creney was a highly decorated officer, who participated in the battles of Gettysburg (under Biddle), the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. He was in command as Lt Col of the Regiment as of June 3rd, 1864, was severely wounded in the June 18th assault on Petersburg, returned in late August after recovering only to be severely wounded again on Feb 5th, 1865 at Dabney Mills.
