Fol. Cont. h. mor. w. raised bands, gilt lettering, blind tooled title on front sides. (Binds. first 2 vols. severely dam.: spine vol. 1-2 for the greater part gone, sides loose (& first 2 lvs.), spine vol. 3-4 loosening and lower part gone, all corners bumped, some sm. dam. to other 2 binds., a few marg. tears to beginning vol. 1, sl. browned/foxed in places).

Luxurious edition published in installments by the greatest Belgian specialists of the 19th c. i.a. the nurseryman Alexandre Bivort (1809-1872), the director of the Vilvorde horticultural school Laurent de Bavay (1795-1855) and a Namur man, passionate about horticulture, Auguste-Philippe Royer (1796-1867). It describes some 450 fruits and is illustrated with 384 superb (hand)cold. lithographic plates picturing incredibly realistic fruits of which many pears and apples but also apricots, cherries, figs, strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, peaches, plums, grapes, etc. - Bunyard, p.441; cf. Oak Spring Pomona 53. - The work is unrecorded in numerous major botanical reference works (Pritzel, Nissen, Plesch), and is rarely found complete.
