ANSEL ADAMS | 'APPROACHING STORM NEAR FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA'
ANSEL ADAMS
1902-1984
'APPROACHING STORM NEAR FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA'
gelatin silver print, flush-mounted, mounted again to larger board, signed in pencil on the mount, a Carmel studio stamp, with title, date, and annotation 'Remounted 1978' in ink, on the reverse, circa 1936, printed circa 1938
image: 9⅝ by 14⅞ in. (24.4 by 37.8 cm.)
Condition Report:
This early print, on paper with a matte finish, is in generally excellent condition. Upon close inspection under raking light, the following is visible: very faint silvering at the extreme edges in the darkest areas; a slightly glossy vertical line in the upper right quadrant; a few tiny impressions; and scattered deposits of original retouching. The upper left corner is slightly bumped.
The larger, secondary mount is faintly age-darkened mostly in a thin band at the periphery of the print. On the reverse are small adhesive remnants along the left and right edges. 'Remounted 1978' is written in an unidentified hand in ink just below the Carmel studio stamp.
When examined under ultraviolet light, this photograph does not appear to fluoresce.
Although Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career, the Carmel studio stamp on the reverse of the present mount is not included. The stamp, similar to BMFA 11, but with the zip code '93923,' is dated with both the negative and printing dates (in this case, c. 1936 and c. 1938, respectively) in an unidentified hand in ink.
