ANSEL ADAMS
1902-1984
ASPEN, NORTHERN NEW MEXICO

gelatin silver print, mounted to Flaxon illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 5 and 6), with title in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1958, printed between 1962 and 1963
image: 10¼ by 13¼ in. (26 by 33.7 cm.)
framed: 21½ by 24⅝ in. (54.6 by 62.5 cm.)

Condition Report:
This rare, early print delivers exceptional tonal range and detail throughout. The print itself is clean and in generally excellent condition. There is one tiny deposit of original retouching at the lower left quadrant. The ink signature on the mount remains robust and legible.

The mount has minor soiling and wear to the edges and corners. There are tape remnants at the left, right, and lower edges. The upper edge is age-darkened.

The reverse of the mount is lightly soiled. The board is abraded in 1/2-inch sections at the left, right, and lower edges.

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' includes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels that Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of the mount: between 1962 and 1963.

Provenance:
Acquired by the present owner, 1967
