Wilson and the Surviving Members of the Expedition. London: Smith, Elder, 1913. First edition. Two volumes. Publisher's blue gilt lettered vertically ribbed cloth, the top edges gilt. 9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches (24 x 16 cm); 633; 534 pp., extensively illustrated with frontispieces to each volume, numerous folding maps, double-page and single-page plates after photographs, drawings, etc. The bindings well preserved given the heft of the volumes but lightly rubbed along extremities, spotting, worst at first and last leaves, edges and tissue guards, some offsetting from laid-in clippings, volume II without front free endpaper.

First edition describing Scott's ill-fated final expedition aboard the Terra Nova. In search of the South Pole, the expedition reached the Pole only to discover that Amundsen had preceded them by 34 days. The five men on the expedition died on the return journey about 29 March 1912, just 11 miles south of their food depot, and were not found until November, at which point Scott's journals were recovered and sent to London for this publication.
