ANTEBELLUM SHIPBUILDER'S HALF HULL

Monumental Hardwood Builder's Model for a Three-Mast Schooner, probably built in the Amos Dyer Yard in Millbridge, Maine, circa 1858. Marked on back "Amos Dyer, Cherryfield" in paint, and with a mid-19th c. shipping label from the Eastern Express Co. of Boston. The model is a 14 tier laminate, 68" long, on a 71" x 11 3/4" pine backplate.
Amos W. Dyer (7 July 1813-7 Sept 1866) owned one of the three active shipyards in Millbridge in 1858: J.W. Sawyer, Ezekial Dyer and Amos Dyer. According to the "Daily Eastern Argus" newspaper of 20 May, 1863, Amos Dyer had three ships totaling 1300 tons in the stocks. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Cherryfield, Washington County.
