ANTIQUE BYZANTINE CAST BRONZE RELIQUARY CROSS

An antique Byzantine cast bronze reliquary cross, known as an enkolpion, with a hinge suspension loop. It depicts an image of the crucified Jesus Christ, arms outstretched upon the cross. He wears a collobium, a sleeveless garment. The reverse features a representation of the Virgin Mary portrayed in the orans prayer pose. Reliquary crosses were popular in the Orthodox world in the Byzantine and post Byzantine centuries. They were composed of two halves joined by a hinge. Weight 36 g.
