ANTIQUE FRENCH EGYPTIAN REVIVAL MARBLE MANTEL CLOCK

An antique late 19th-century French mantel clock made of black marble with gilt bronze mounts. The body is hand-painted with gilt hieroglyphs and zoomorphic motifs. A sphynx sculpture tops the composition. Round enamel clock face with convex glass door in gilt fittings. Dial with Arabic numerals and filigree decor, marked Casa Escasany S.A. Buenos Aires. 8 Day movement. Casa Escasany label sticker on the bottom. Embossed hallmark GS, Medaille D Or, 1867 on the rim. GS stands for Georges Emile Henri Servant, 1828 to 1890, a prominent French clockmaker, who was noted for the high quality of his bronzes at both the Paris Universal Exhibition 1855 and the London Exhibition in 1862. He won a gold medal in the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition for his Neo-Greek and Egyptian works. Many of Servants clocks were exported to the US and sold by Louis Tiffany Inc. and Hamann and Roche of New York, for instance.
