ANTIQUE JAPANESE MEIJI ERA CLOISONNE ENAMEL KOGO BOX

An antique Japanese, late Meiji era, covered silvered and enamel kogo or box for incense. The cover of the box is enameled with a polychrome design depicting a sparrow seated on a branch surrounded by blossoming sakura flowers made in the Cloisonne technique. The body is covered with enamel in a yellow shade. Circa: late 19th century to the early 20th century. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often at the tea ceremony, the temple, or for the small worship area in the home. The kogo is also a wonderful item of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in, and around the house or office.
