ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX KORSUN MOTHER OF GOD ICON

An antique Russian Orthodox hand painted Korsun icon of the Mother of God with the Child, revered in the Orthodox Church as miraculous. Refers to the iconographic types of Hodegetria and Eleus, or Tenderness. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, levkas, gilded on a wood board. Titled in Church Slavonic, lower to the center, and upper right and left. Circa: 19th century. The name Korsun indicates the Byzantine, Greek origin of the icon.
