ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE
French
1796 - 1875
GUERRIER TARTARE ARRÊTANT SON CHEVAL (TARTAR WARRIOR CHECKING HIS HORSE)

signed: BARYE, the dial of the clock inscribed: LE ROY & FILS / PALAIS ROYAL / A PARIS GIE MONTPENSIER 13-15
partially gilt and enamelled bronze, light brown patina, on a gilt and partially enamelled bronze Byzantine-style base, incorporating a clock
Warrior: 34.5cm., 13⅝in.;
50cm., 19⅝in. overall;
base: 19.2 by 43.5 by 27.5cm., 7⅝ by 17⅛ by 10¾in.

Condition Report:
Overall the condition of the bronze is very good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is barely visible restored break at the stem of the plume on top of the helmet. There are some very minor losses to the enamelling in a few areas: including to the tail, helmet and reigns, also to the enamelling at the base. There is also minor craquelure to the enamel, and a few areas of abrasion. There appears to be a small knock or loss to the bottom finial of the quiver. There is some minor dark spotting to the bronze. There is some dirt to the crevices where the hands connect with the reigns. The base is made in sections and joints are visible including vertically at the centre of the short sides of the base. There are a few very minor stable fissures to the metal including to the strapwork decoration panels to either side of the clock. There are minor dirt marks to the face of the clock and to the glass case.

Sotheby’s does not guarantee the working movement of the clock.
