Penck, whose real name is Ralf Winkler, was born in Dresden in 1939 and initially worked in East Berlin in divided Germany. Penck's images are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of pictorial elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols. Penck is also considered the father of the "Neue Wilden", an early 1980s movement with an ironic and provocative aesthetic.
