336-323 BC, The East, BABYLONIA Babylon under Alexander the Great. Baal seated left holding scepter and resting left hand on seat. Rev. lion striding to left, ? above. Dotted border on both sides.The Lion Staters of Babylon were an important local component of Alexander the Great's eastern coinage. Based on a Cilician prototype, they were introduced by Alexander and they survived for nearly half a century, well into the 280's under Seleukos I. The denomination is usually described as a Stater or Tetradrachm, but most likely is a two Shekel of the Babylonian standard of ca. 8.4 grams.15.80 g
