Description:

[ARCTIC]
PEARY, ROBERT E. The North Pole. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910. One of 500 copies, signed by Robert Edwin Peary and R. A. Bartlett. Publisher's white vellum gilt, upper cover with central gilt medallion portrait of Peary. 11 1/4 x 9 inches (28.5 x 23 cm); xii, 326 pp.; illustrated with four photogravures and 112 mounted photographic reproductions, and folding map. Lacking ribbon ties, covers a bit soiled, front and rear hinges cracked at endpapers (holding on tapes), internally generally a clean copy.

The best account of Peary's 1905-1906 Polar expedition, during which Peary and his companion Matthew Henson claimed to have reached the North Pole, though there remains some debate whether he in fact accomplished that feat, based on later analyses. Regardless, his was an epic journey. Arctic Bibliography 13230.

C Property of a Massachusetts Gentleman
Estimate $800-1,200
