ARR Matthew Smith (1879-1959)- Oil painting - "Mixed Flowers in a vase" canvas 28ins x 12ins, in deep gilt moulded frame
Provenance: Duncan R. Miller Fine Arts Ltd. 17 Flask Walk, Hampstead, London, NW3 1HJ and 6 Bury Street, St James's, London, SW1Y 6AB
Provenance: With Arthur Tooth & Son, Private Collection
Note: In 1925, living and working in Paris, Smith began to paint still lives and for the most part flower paintings. Like Van Gogh, painting flowers allowed him to extend his colour range beyond the simple palette he had been using for his so-called 'red nudes' of 1924.Having begun with tulips he rapidly moved on to more intricate flower forms, mixing them into increasingly ambitious arrangements.
