Silver Art Deco sugar bowl, “JW” workshop, Kraków, 1930s.

Goldsmith JW, 84, Kraków 1931–1963
Weight: 310 g, dimensions 137 mm x approx. 90 mm x 72 mm

Poland, Kraków, Second Polish Republic, 1930s. 3-fine silver (800), interior gilded; body embossed, formed, soldered, and polished.
A sugar bowl with a compact, geometric form, resembling a cuboid with strongly rounded, bulging side walls. The smooth body, devoid of ornamental decoration, rests on four spherical feet. The rectangular, hinged lid has a stepped shape, with three elongated, semicircular raised sections and a wavy outline along its shorter sides.

The interior of the sugar bowl and the inner surface of the lid are gilded. The gilding served a decorative purpose and protected the silver from direct contact with the contents of the vessel. The restraint in ornamentation, the combination of flat surfaces with softly rounded sides, and the rhythmic stepped design of the lid are characteristic of Polish Art Deco design of the 1930s.

On the bottom is a workshop mark within a rectangular field featuring the monogram “JW,” along with Polish hallmarks, including the mark for 3-grade silver and the mark of the Kraków Assay Office. This type of hallmark was used from 1931 to 1963; the object’s style and craftsmanship suggest it dates to the period of the Second Polish Republic.
