Warsaw, circa 1931–1939
800-fine silver, gilded, engraved, blackened
Manufacturer’s mark: “SN”
Weight: 68.4 g
Dimensions: 7.1 x 4.4 cm
An original silver case for tablets or pills, made in Warsaw during the Second Polish Republic. The object features the elegant, understated style characteristic of Art Deco.
The case takes the form of a flat rectangular box with slightly rounded corners. The lid is mostly smooth, and its only decoration is a narrow, transverse band featuring an engraved and blackened grapevine motif. The composition consists of stylized leaves, winding vines, and bunches of grapes, which stand out clearly against the finely hatched, dark background.
The lid is mounted on a multi-jointed hinge, and the front edge features a small, elongated handle to facilitate opening. The interior of the case is entirely gilded, giving it an elegant appearance that contrasts with the silver exterior.
The inner surface bears the Polish state hallmark featuring the number “3,” a woman’s head, and the letter “W,” indicating 800-fine silver tested by the Warsaw Assay Office. Next to it is the manufacturer’s rectangular name mark: “SN.”
An elegant example of Polish interwar goldsmithing, combining practical function with understated Art Deco-inspired decoration.
Condition: as shown in the photos.
