In 1587 the author succeeded R. Chaim Vital as leader of the Jerusalem Community. His relentless pursuit of Hebrew manuscripts resulted in his magnum opus, the Shitah Mekubetzeth. Responsa no. 3 here is R. David ibn Zimra’s famous edict against the Karaites.
