WWII - Korean War US Air Force Pilot and Astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom Plaster Plaque. Handmade, molded plaster plaque of Grissom. Signature of the artist and "1999" present in the lower right corner. Virgil "Gus" Grissom was a member of NASA 's Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. He is known for becoming the 2nd American ever to reach outer space in the Mercury spacecraft "Liberty Bell 7" on July 21, 1961. Unfortunately, on January 27, 1967, while serving as Commander of Apollo I, Gus Grissom died along with astronauts Ed White and Roger B. Chaffee when their command module caught fire during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Kennedy, Florida. Prior to his NASA Career, Grissom was a WWII Aviation Cadet and a USAF Fighter Pilot during the Korean War, flying 100 combat missions.
