An engraved pewter and rosewood marquetry cabinet-on-stand with a central allegorical depiction of the monarchy. Ca. 1703.
The spindle gallery above an architectural facade with nine drawers and a central cupboard decorated with an allegory of Monarchy, the drawers decorated with various symbols referring to good leadership including some Latin text fragments 'in lucet tenebris' and 'legebus sol(itus)'. The stand with spirally turned supports joined by x-stretchers on bun feet.
The splendour of early 18th-century cabinets is characterised by fine inlay work in different types of wood or pewter and brass Boulle marquetry. A beautiful example of this type of marquetry cabinet is this exceptional piece of furniture from the workshop Henri (or Hendrik) van Soest who supplied exclusive furniture to wealthy citizens and nobility all over Europe.
This sublime cabinet with an allegorical representation of the monarchy is a variant of a cabinet that he designed for the elector of Trier and also bishop of Speyer, Johann Hugo von Orsbeck (1634-1711). Van Soest often sent a drawn model and description of the ordered cabinet by letter for the approval of the commissioner. These documents have rarely been preserved, except for the Elector's cabinet, of which the drawing and a complete description of the complex iconology still exists.¹ In the engraved marquetry we see the Monarchess, represented as a woman with a large globe and a lion on her sides. On the drawers, we find all kinds of symbols referring to aspects of good leadership.
Being the strategical businessman as he was, Van Soest sometimes reused his designs a couple of times. This cabinet is an example of such a reused design. A third variant exists with almost identical dimensions and similar decorations which was sold on 24 November 2004 at Christie's London, South Kensington. This cabinet, similarly depicting an allegorical representation of the monarchy in its centre, is said to be dated 1703, which gives an indication of the date of the present cabinet. The Elector's cabinet appears to be untraceable ever since WWII. Luckily, these accompanied pieces are a surviving witness of the noble splendour and unique craftmanship.

Driedelig. Ebbenhout-, rozenhout- en palissanderfineer op eik. Versierd met gegraveerd messing en tin inlegwerk.
Top met opengewerkte balustrade met verguld houten balusters. Centraal gesloten gedeelte met messing inlegwerk.
Corpus met centrale deur, zes laden verbergend, omgeven door acht kleine laden en één groter onderaan. Deur en laden met messing en tin 'Boulle'-inlegwerk met voorstelling van een allegorie van de monarchie, op de voorborden van de laden symbolische voorstellingen die verwijzen naar eigenschappen van goed leiderschap. Stijlen met rechte zuilen met inlegwerk en verguld Korinthisch kapiteel. Originele voet met vier kruisgewijs verbonden gedraaide pilaren.
Henri van Soest leidt een groot atelier gevestigd in de oude beurs en levert exclusief meubilair voor Europese adel en welgestelde burgers. Kenmerkend voor zijn ontwerpen zijn de gegraveerde koperen en tinnen plaatjes zoals dit te zien is in dit subliem uitgewerkte kabinet met een allegorische voorstelling van de monarchie. Het is een variant op een luxueuze kast die hij ontwierp de keurvorst van Trier en tevens bisschop van Speyer, Johann Hugo von Orsbeck (1634-1711). Vaak stuurde Van Soest per brief een ontwerp en beschrijving van het bestelde kabinet voor akkoord van de buitenlandse adel. Deze zijn zelden bewaard gebleven, op het kabinet van de keurvorst na, hiervan bestaat nog steeds het getekend ontwerp en een gehele beschrijving vinden van de complexe iconologie.¹ In het gegraveerd inlegwerk zien we, de Monarchin, voorgesteld als vrouw met aan haar zijden een grote wereldbol en een leeuw. Op de lades treffen we allerlei symbolen die refereren naar de eigenschappen van goed leiderschap.
Zakenman als hij was, hergebruikte Van Soest zijn ontwerpen soms meerdere keren. Dit is zo een voorbeeld van een hergebruikt ontwerp. Zo bestaat er nog een variant met bijna identieke afmetingen en gelijkaardige decoraties dat op 24 november 2004, bij Christie's Londen, South Kensington werd verkocht. Dit kabinet, dat eveneens centraal een allegorische voorstelling van de monarchie vertoont, zou 1703 gedateerd zijn wat een indicatie geeft van datering van het kabinet hier aangeboden in veiling. Het kabinet van de keurvorst zelf is sinds WOII niet meer te traceren, maar gelukkig bieden de varianten op van Orsbeck’s exemplaar ons een beeld van deze adellijke luister.

Le corps avec un battant au centre, dissimulant six tiroirs, entouré de huit petits tiroirs et un grand dans la partie inférieure. Battant et tiroirs avec incrustations 'Boulle' en laiton figurant une allégorie de la monarchie, des armoiries gravées et des sujets héraldiques. Montants avec pilastres à décor d'incrustations et châpiteau corinthien doré.
Le support d'origine repose sur quatre colonnes tournées.
