JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #17: Good- (1.8). Two spine splits (1¾" and 2½"), 1" tear to front cover, some rubs, tiny chips and nicks. Cream to off-white pages.

MYSTIC #12: Good (2.0). Spine roll, staple pull, a touch of staple rust, transverse tears at spine, small cover chip neat top right edge, a few short tears, dogeared corner. Cream to off-white pages.

MYSTIC #27: Good- (1.8). Spine roll, staple rust with rust migration, staple pull, edgewear, cup ring residue. Off-white pages.

STRANGE TALES #15: Fair (1.0). Spine roll, cover detached, spine and edge chips, short tears, 2x5½" piece torn from back cover.

Covers and art: Bill Everett, Bernie Krigstein, Sol Brodsky, Russ Heath, Carmine Infantino, Gene Colan, Paul Hodge, Sid Check, Robert Q. Sale, Harry Anderson, Mort Lawrence, Vic Carrabatta, Bob Fujitani, Al Eadeh, Art Peddy, Larry Woromay, George Roussos, Sam Kweskin, Vic Dowling.

EC also-ran Sid Check's "Machine Age" in Journey Into Mystery 17 is chockablock with Wally Wood swipes, including space ship interiors featuring Wood's trademark turbine-shaped gewgams and doodads, Craftint doubletone A-bomb blasts, and numerous poses that will be instantly familiar to fans conversant with Wood's oeuvre. Would Wood have minded Check's unchecked proliferation of swipes in this tale? Who knows? It's possible that Check heard Wood's time-saving advice straight from the source when they shared studio space in the early 1950s: "Never draw anything you can copy, never copy anything you can trace, never trace anything you can cut out and paste up."

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
