The work is unsigned. Supporting materials attribute the work to Indiana artist Jacob Cox who was known to paint in and around the sitter's hometown. There are stylistic similarities as well, including the handling of the distant countryside landscape behind Mr. Thayer, which strongly resembles signed landscapes by Jacob Cox.
