ATTRIBUÉ À ADRIEN DELORME Reçu Maître en 1748
ATTRIBUÉ À ADRIEN DELORME Reçu Maître en 1748
TWO VANTAUX COMMODE Paris, Louis XV period, circa 1760
Fir tree frame, satin, amaranth and light wood veneer, gilt bronze and Breche d'Alep
marble H. 85 cm, W. 97,5 cm, D. 45 cm
Characterized by its marquetry of light and dark shades of scrolls, our chest of drawers has three slightly curved main sides, in an alternation of blond and brown satin. It opens with two leaves, whose locks, real and figurative, together with the small acanthus scrolls, form the only gilded bronze ornamentation. Very famous in his time for his marquetry, lacquer and varnish in the taste of the Far East, the production of Adrien Delorme is also characterized by the realization of many curved chests of drawers. Despite the length of his career (he ended his activity in 1783), he retained a clear predilection for the Louis XV style. These chests of drawers are sometimes decorated with shimmering Chinese lacquer or European varnishes, sometimes with geometric inlays or flowers, the latter being able to coexist on the same piece of furniture. They offer compositions that are a little complicated by the very sinuous frames of foliage. These scrolls, when they stand alone on a background of herringbone veneer in very contrasting tones, also constitute a characteristic decoration by Adrien Delorme, presented on our chest of drawers, as well as on many other models (fig.1 and 2).
