Christ at the column
oil on panel
18.7 X 14.7 cm

The handling of bthe present panel draws close comparison to the figure of Christ in the signed Flagellation by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, in the Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht.

In the larger painting, the figures of Christ and of the soldier on his left are after an engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I (1596 - 1675), after an original by Gerard Seghers (1591 - 1651)

Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-1675) was a Flemish Baroque painter and engraver. He was born in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands and spent most of his life in Antwerp, where he became a prominent member of the city's art community.

Diepenbeeck studied under the prominent Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens and was influenced by his style. He specialised in religious and mythological scenes and his paintings are known for their vibrant colours and dramatic lighting.

In addition to painting, Diepenbeeck was also a skilled engraver and produced many prints, some of which were used as book illustrations. He was also involved in tapestry design and produced several designs for the Brussels tapestry workshops.

Diepenbeeck was a respected member of Antwerp's Guild of Saint Luke and was appointed court painter to the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria.Click here to share:
