ATTRIBUTED TO ANTON MAUVE (DUTCH 1838-1888) Rider on the shore faintly inscribed on the reverse oil on panel 26.2 x 35.5 cm Anton Mauve (1838–1888) was a Dutch Realist painter known for his landscapes, particularly those featuring rural scenes, dunes, and animals. He was born in Zaandam, Netherlands, and he studied at the Haarlem School of Drawing and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Mauve was a leading figure in the Hague School, a group of artists who were influenced by the Barbizon School and emphasised realistic depictions of the Dutch countryside and rural life. He was particularly skilled at capturing the subtle variations of light and shadow in his landscapes, as well as the atmospheric effects of the Dutch climate. Mauve also had a significant influence on his cousin Vincent van Gogh, who considered him a mentor and teacher. Van Gogh admired Mauve's use of colour and light and incorporated similar techniques into his own work.Click here to share:
