ATTRIBUTED TO ARY DE VOIS | PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, SAID TO BE THE ARTIST ADRIAN VAN DER WERFF (1659-1722), HALF-LENGTH, AS A SHEPHERD
Property from a Private Collection
ATTRIBUTED TO ARY DE VOIS
Utrecht 1630/5 - 1680 Leiden
PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, SAID TO BE THE ARTIST ADRIAN VAN DER WERFF (1659-1722), HALF-LENGTH, AS A SHEPHERD
inscribed with monogram on the reverse: ALB (in ligature) 153
oil on copper
copper: 8 by 7 in.; 20.3 by 17.8 cm.
framed: 13¼ by 12¼ in.; 33.7 by 31.1 cm.
Condition Report:
The copper is stable, though the bottom left corner is slightly undulated. Underneath an old varnish the image reads well, with the details to the fur very well preserved. Some minor abrasions due to framing appear along the edges, which have been strengthened, for example: the bottom left and right corner. Inspection under UV reveals an old, uneven varnish. The bottom left and top left quadrant have a few, scattered spots of retouching. Very slight, and thin inpainting on the face of the sitter fluoresce under UV. Further small retouches could be scattered in the sky at right and in the exposed neck and chest of the figure, though reading is impeded due to the varnish. Painting could favor from a light clean and re-varnish. Offered in an ebonized wood frame.
Provenance:
Sir Thomas Hanmer, 4th Baronet (1677-1746), Flintshire, Wales;
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 9 May 1865, lot 132 (where unsold and as A. de Voys);
Sir T. Harmer;
J. Schofield;
Thence by descent in the family;
By whom anonymously sold ('Property of a Lady'), London, Christie's, 12 October 1979, lot 48 (as Arie de Voys), for 761 Guineas;
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 9 April 2003, lot 53 (as Circle of Arie de Vois)
With Rafael Valls Limited, London, circa 2005;
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 8 July 2009, lot 141 (as indistinctly signed upper left);
There acquired by the present collector.
