ATTRIBUTED TO BARTOLOMEO MONTAGNA | BUST OF CHRIST

ATTRIBUTED TO BARTOLOMEO MONTAGNA
Orzinuovi circa 1450 - 1523 Vicenza
BUST OF CHRIST

oil on panel, transferred to canvas, laid on panel
17⅞ by 14 in.; 45.4 by 35.5 cm.

Condition Report:
The painting appears to have once been on a panel, transferred to canvas, and then laid down on panel. The backing panel is flat, uncradled and stable. The painting reads clearly, and there is a stable pattern of craquelure throughout. Some of the darker details, such as the hair in the background have lost some definition with age. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish that impedes some inspection. There is more recent restoration at all of the edges, as well as some strokes in the costume, and in the shadows of the figure and his costume, although there are not too many recent retouches to his face. Many of these strokes of retouching address some of the fine pattern of craquelure. There are a few scattered spots of restoration in the background, and in raking light, there is a very faint undulation to the surface. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in an elaborately carved, decorated, and gilded tabernacle frame with sculptural details.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
