ATTRIBUTED TO DAVID ROBERTS (EDINBURGH 1796-1864 LONDON) The Bishop and the Knight oil on panel 23 x 17.5 cm PROVENANCE: Hartley Fine Arts, Albemarle st, London W1 David Roberts, born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1796. known for his highly detailed and accurate depictions of architectural and landscape scenes from around the world. Roberts began his career as an apprentice to a house painter in Edinburgh, but his talent for drawing and painting soon led him to pursue a career as a professional artist. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and later in London, where he became known for his highly detailed watercolours and oil paintings. In the 1830s, Roberts began to focus on producing a series of prints based on his extensive travels throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. His goal was to create a comprehensive record of the world's most important architectural and cultural landmarks, and he produced over 200 lithographs during his career. Roberts' prints were highly acclaimed for their accuracy and attention to detail, and they were widely reproduced in books and other publications.
