ATTRIBUTED TO GIOVACCHINO FORTINI (SETTIGNANO 1671-1736 FLORENCE), A MARBLE FIGURE OF A STANDING BISHOP SAINTITALIAN, CIRCA 1700Traditionally called Saint Norbert, holding a bishop's mitre and scroll, on an integrally carved rectangular base 78.5cm highPlease note- it has been suggested that this is not a statue of Saint Norbert, nor of any bishop but that instead it is a sculpture of the slightly obscure former Doge of Venice who left that office to become a Benedictine monk- St Pietro I Orseolo (928-987). What is taken to be a mitre is in fact the Doge's cap, and he wears a Benedictine habit. Provenance: Heim Gallery, London, 1984. LITERATURE: G. Pratesi, ed., Repertorio della Scultura Fiorentina del Seicento e Settecento, Turin, 1993, II, fig. 252. Condition Report: Head has been restored at the neck, right hand looks to have possibly also been restored at the wrist. Some wear and chips to leading and exposed edges, most notably drapery edges and plinthPlease see additional images which form a part of this condition reportCondition Report Disclaimer
