ATTRIBUTED TO GUY HEAD | RECLINING NUDE

[ translate ]

ATTRIBUTED TO GUY HEAD
1753 - 1800
RECLINING NUDE

inscribed on a hand written label, verso; Lady Hamilton as a sleeping nymph
oil on canvas
painting: 122 by 168.3 cm., 48 by 66¼ in.
framed: 135 by 181cm., 53⅛ by 71¼in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is visible frame abrasion along the lower margin, and small paint losses in the upper right corner, beside the woman's right foot, and scattered in the red drapery and background behind her head. There are retouchings visible to the naked eye to previous areas of paint loss or lifting - also through the red curtain, but most notably throughout the woman's torso and face, the most significant areas being an area in her cheek (3.5 x 6.5 cm.) and an area below her chest (14 x 12 cm.). Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and reveals further, more minor areas of retouching scattered in the background. The painting is in overall fair condition.
