ATTRIBUTED TO JAMES NORTHCOTE (BRITISH 1746 - 1831) AFTER SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS PORTRAIT OF EDWARD GIBBON (BRITISH 1737 - 1794) Oil on canvas 77 x 64cm (30¼ x 25 in.) Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds, A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, New Haven 2000, Text vol., p. 218, cat. no. 725b (as Attributed to Northcote, and perhaps the same picture from the Munby saleExhibited: Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Le Livre Anglais: Trésors des collections Anglaises, 1951, no. 498 (as Northcote)Please note measurements do not include the frame unless otherwise stated. Condition Report: The canvas is relined and presents a light varnish across the whole surface. UV light reveals various retouches: a wide patch of about 10cm diameter on the cheek of the sitter, extensive retouching on the forehead, with restorations up to 6cm wide; a 7cm wide patch of restauration on the left shoulder, a 2cm wide restoration line which crosses the whole painting, starting below the sitters right shoulder and ending at the height of the sitter's left shoulder; to conclude, various smaller dotted retouches are present on the right border, and in the upper right corner.
