The sitter in this portrait is probably that of Lieutenant General George Preston (1707 - 1785). He was the son of William Preston of Gorton (1661-1773) and Mary Ramsay (1682 - ). George served his life in military service and became Col. of the Royal Scots Greys.
Philip Hussey (1713-1783) was born in Co. Cork and began his career as a sailor. After surviving a number of shipwrecks, he began to develop his skill in painting. Influenced by life at sea, Hussey's his first works were drawings depicting the figure heads of ships. Perhaps not as well known as his contemporaries, Hussey has been considered for his details with female portraiture. Hussey was also a skilled botanist and florist, which is evident in his work.
