Thomas Webster achieved great success as a genre painter, producing small-scale paintings in both oil and watercolour throughout his long career. His most famous and popular work, The Village Choir, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Charles Dickens thought Webster such a good painter of children that he commissioned him to paint Squeers School-Dotheboys Hall, an illustration to his novel Nicholas Nickelby.
