Catalogue note:
August H.O. Rolle was born in Sibley County, Minnesota. After serving in the military during the Spanish-American War, Rolle lived in Washington, D.C. from 1900 until his death, working as a forestry expert with the Census Bureau. Rolle studied with Edmund Clarence Messer, Richard Norris Brooke and James Henry Moser at the Corcoran School of Art from 1905 to 1915, and was a member of the Washington Landscape Club, later the Washington Society of American painters.
