AUGUST HUDLER (Odelzhausen, Germany, 1868-1905). "Maternity," 1902. Marble. Signed and dated.
AUGUST HUDLER (Odelzhausen, Germany, 1868-1905).
"Maternity", 1902.
Marble.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 40 cm.
In the present work we see a seated female figure caressing a small child. It is an allegory of motherhood. It is a sculptural group of classical composition, in which the restrained and elegant expressiveness of the lady stands out, as well as the positions, full of grace.
Around 1900, August Hudler was at the height of his creative powers. The reformist architect Fritz Schumacher remembered the artist as a "vigorous sculptor with the keenest art of characterisation". Collectors of his works included the upper classes of Berlin and Dresden. He worked with architects such as Fritz Schumacher, Wilhelm Kreis and Karl Groß. Works by the artist can be found in Berlin, Leipzig, Munich and above all in Dresden, where Hudler lived and worked from 1900 until his death. Many outstanding creations were created here, of which numerous, albeit lesser-known, designs have been preserved in the Sculpture Collection.
