AUSTRIA. 2 Talers, ND (1646). Hall Mint. Ferdinand Charles. NGC Unc Details--Graffiti.

Dav-3363; KM-934. A boldly struck example with crisp design elements displaying a thin layer of patina complemented by a light iridescent sheen in the protected areas of the legends. As indicated on the NGC insert "Rev Graffiti", somewhere along the way someone inscribed very petite and shallow digits of the date "16-46" divided by the imperial eagles head. The open areas show light signs of an old cleaning now subdued by a thin layer of soft gray tone mentioned for accuracy. Despite its shortcomings, a handsome and charming survivor, sure to add depth to the next collection it enters.

Normally most graffiti is considered to be an impairment, but in this instance it is not very distracting and in fact is quite charming. The date inscribed on the reverse not only corresponds to the date of issue for this piece, but also corresponds to date of when Ferdinand Charles came of age taking over his mother's governmental duties.

Estimate: $700 - $1,000.

Provenance: From the Habsburg Collection.
