AUSTRIAN WORK
Pair of chairs in molded and carved mahogany, with a backrest formed of five curved, openwork crossbars, decorated in the center with scrollwork foliage, and molded side panels. Molded square-section legs, joined by an “H”-shaped brace. Seat upholstered in a cashmere-patterned fabric.
Circa 1900–1910.
Height: 100 cm – Width: 57 cm – Depth: 55 cm
Our chair is similar to those found in the anteroom of the apartment of Rudolf Kraus, brother of the writer and satirist Karl Kraus, located at 13 Nibelungengasse in Vienna. Adolf Loos (1870–1933), an Austrian architect, displayed his works in this apartment and commissioned cabinetmakers such as Josef Veillich and Friedrich Otto Schmidt, frequently drawing inspiration from 18th-century models.
