Trained in the school of the Photo League, he became an important exponent of abstract photography, but in the 1930s during the Great Depression he devoted himself to documenting life in the slums of New York in a style reminiscent of Minor White. This photograph is part of the series with which he produced the volume 'Harlem Document. Photographs 1932-1940'.
